We
correct errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word usage. By
means of a complete style sheet, we ensure consistency of style and content
throughout your document. Depending on the kind of document, the style sheet
contains some or all of the following: 1) a vocabulary list consisting
of words you prefer to spell differently from the spellings recommended by Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary,
Eleventh Edition (Webs. 11th), as well as any corrections in word usage; 2)
a list of proper nouns (names of persons and places); 3) a list of trademarks;
4) a list of foreign words not found in Webs. 11th; 5) a page or
more devoted to style rules concerning corrections our copy editor makes in
your document.
In
addition, we read for overall clarity and sense on behalf of the intended
audience; we query you concerning unclear passages and make suggestions for
changes; we note permissions you need to publish copyrighted material; we
cross-check references, art, figures, tables, equations, and other features for
consistency with their mentions in text; and we prepare your manuscript for the
next stage of the publication process.
Besides Webs. 11th, we use The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (or any other manual you
prefer—for APA or MLA style, for example), Words
into Type, 3rd Edition, as well as your company’s or publisher’s style
sheet.
